Introduction
Interactive whiteboards combine a computer and projector with a specially-built interactive whiteboard. Users can control the computer (and any software on it) by using a whiteboard pen or stylus or their finger on the whiteboard; or with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Any notes or annotations made on the whiteboard by a teacher or student during the class can be saved electronically.
The two main types of Interactive whiteboard installed in Cambridgeshire schools, colleges and community centres are: Smart Boards and Promethean Activboards.
Both Smart and Promethean Activboards use proprietary software to create interactive presentations. You can usually view other software - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet browsers etc - but you can't save annotations to these documents; they'll be saved to a separate file. With E-beam you can use Powerpoint (and save any changes to the ppt file).
You can sometimes download the Smart/Promethean software for free (or else ask your manager for a copy), and there are many resources that either these companies, or other teachers have created that you can use. See below for links to resources.

Interactive whiteboards and teaching
An interactive whiteboard is not interactive by itself. This is a very interesting blog by a English teacher with useful information and tips about IWB and teaching.
